This time of year is usually busy with the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping, packed malls and long lines at stores.
Honestly, I love being in the middle of it all. People may think that sounds crazy, but I like the crazy!
Generally speaking, I find that people are in a much better mood this time of year. They are more eager to give a smile or extend a “Merry Christmas” to someone.
But this year is different. There are no packed malls, and yes, while some stores may still be somewhat busy, the mood just isn’t the same.
The world has become insecure, unsure of what type of reaction they will receive from a simple “hello” to a stranger. At this point, we have been in the middle of this pandemic for almost nine months. That’s the length of a pregnancy!
As I reflect on the last nine months and being at home more often, I wish I had done more to enjoy it. I wish I had taken advantage of the time to sit...just sit; whether to read my bible, enjoy a good book or play board games with the family.
I believe we will be in this unique situation for at least a few more months and I don’t want to regret not making the most of every moment. God has provided us a unique opportunity to SLOW DOWN! Let’s take it!
The word STILL is defined as “not moving or making a sound” as well as “deep silence and calm”.
I think to be still is so much harder than it sounds.
Not just to be still while watching Netflix or scrolling through social media, but to actually be still...to meditate.
I saw a quote once that I absolutely love and I read it often. It states “If you listen carefully, the silence is beautiful”. I love that and it is so true. Think about it, how often do we just sit in silence, listening for God to speak to us or letting our minds wander to positive places?
I have a tattoo on my wrist that says “Be Still Exodus 14:14”. I struggle with panic attacks and it is a constant reminder to me that God is fighting for me and I just need to BE STILL!
Another favorite scripture is Psalm 46:10 which reads “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth”.
God is in control….ALWAYS! He is completely aware of what is happening around us. We just need to be still, to listen, to enjoy the quiet moments alone with God, to enjoy the moments alone with our thoughts and to trust Him.
I want to encourage each of you to take advantage of every moment God has given you. Find some time to just BE STILL. It’s amazing what we can hear when we stop moving and stop talking.
I also encourage you to rest this holiday season. Enjoy this extra time with your family.
For many of us, we are not able to travel this year to be with our extended families, and that is hard. I, myself am feeling very homesick these days, but I am committing to taking the time to be still, to listen for God and to enjoy the rest He wants all of us to have during this time. Our mental health is as equally important as our physical health during these crazy times.
I pray God grants all of you the most amazing Christmas season. I pray we never forget why we celebrate and who we celebrate. Love to each and every one of you!
