Teen Devotional: Are We There Yet?

K-Sam Perkins • March 27, 2020

This past summer, our family (the Perkins) took a long trip to Phoenix, AZ to spend some time with our best friends. With Bri being six months pregnant, me suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon, and two zealous little boys in the back seat in the heat of summer, you can imagine the desire to expeditiously get to our destination! The questions of “Are we there yet?” and “When will this be over?” or “How come I can’t sit in the front seat?” had me asking the question, “What were we thinking when we decided to go on this trip?” But once we got to Phoenix, it all made sense. The laughs we shared and the joy of sweet fellowship are now memories forever imprinted in our minds.

When will this be over? Are we there yet? These are questions I’m sure many of us have asked during this crisis. You’re washing your hands, staying in the house, praying for people, getting connected online, only to turn on the news and see that the death rates are rising and quarantine deadlines are being extended. And we may be sitting isolated in our homes thinking to ourselves, “ This is wearying me down…is what I’m doing even making a difference?”

The bible says in Galatians 6:9-10, “ Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

Sometimes, when we’re experiencing painful or challenging times, throwing in the towel can seem like the easiest thing to do. But God is saying, “Don’t let yourself get down. I control the outcome; but I need you to control you.”

It’s easy to look at our external circumstances with eyes of cynicism. We don’t understand why all this is happening. But we don’t need to understand in order to do good. Our willingness and desire to do good to the body of believers, and to those around us, come from one simple fact…a time of harvest will eventually come! It’s a promise that we can all hold onto.

Consider what good you can do this week in your home and your community, and then do it! You’re in control of that! And pray that we, as the body of Christ, will not lose heart, but that we will experience God’s harvest of righteousness.
