The day started off a little more cool and cloudy than a normal Spring day in Denver, CO. That was okay, though. This group of walkers brought their own sunshine, warmth and laughter to support their dear friend, Elaine Brimage.
Elaine shares,
"This year will mark my 7th race that I’ve completed the Pat Tillman 5K. In 2016 after completing the race, I felt ill. After several scans and tests I was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer. Three months after this diagnosis, I was diagnosed with Bladder Cancer. I've continued to participate each year since my diagnosis as an honor to our military, to Pat Tillman and to another year of survival.
Today’s race was extra special. This race marks, to the date, my 5th year anniversary of my cancer diagnosis. This year, due to COVID, the race was done virtually from my home state. When I found this out, I sent out some requests to my friends to see who would like to join me in the walk. Today, 15 of us came together and walked for both these reasons: as an honor to our fallen soldiers and to support me as a survivor still fighting the fight. Each year, a friend of mine in Arizona makes special ribbons for those walking with me to wear in my name. This year she made them for all of us walkers here and mailed them so I was able to present them at the start of the race.
This was a special day full of love, fellowship and support and I remain grateful to be able to complete the race this year."
