A Family Devotional: "Do Everything Without Complaining"

Sonny Rhyne • March 24, 2020

DO EVERYTHING WITHOUT COMPLAINING

Scripture:
  Exodus 16:1-30; Philippians 2:14-16

Goal:
The goal of this devotional is to teach that complaining comes from forgetting God and all the
ways God has been faithful and blessed us in our lives.
Instructions:

Begin with a prayer.

Read the story with the family.  (Exodus 16:1-30; for younger kids verses 1-3, 6-8)

Discuss how ungrateful the Israelites had become and how they had forgotten God and all that
he had done for them.

Had God forgotten about them?

Engage:
Ask the children what the Israelites were complaining about?
What are some of the things we can complain about?
Ask them how their complaining makes God feel?
How does God feel when we complain?
What should we do instead of complaining?
Remember God and His faithfulness and blessings.
What are some of the ways God has been faithful or blessed our family?

Game time: Complaining / Thanksgiving Game
  1. Give each member of the family a rubber band, string or ribbon to put/tie around their wrist.
  2. Tell everyone that if they get caught complaining, they will lose their rubber band, string or ribbon and will have to give it to the one who caught them complaining. Give a specific period of time (until bedtime, the end of the week, etc.),
  3. Also, let everyone know that if you catch someone being grateful that both the one who caught the words of gratitude and the one who spoke the words of gratitude will get an extra rubber band, string or ribbon.
The goal is to see who has the most rubber bands, strings, or ribbons around
their wrist at the end of the designated time.

Create a prize for the winner and smaller prizes for everyone who still has at
least one rubber band, string or ribbon around their wrist.
