MLK Day of Service Food Drive

December 31, 2020

If you or anyone in your group would prefer to donate funds, please give here!

What: HOPEww Chapters around the United States are joining together to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King through a Nationwide food drive! In Denver, we will be joining this effort to help support our local food pantries.

Why: Because of the impacts of Covid 19, food insecurity has increased throughout the US.  More than 80 percent, or 4 in 5, food banks are serving more people now than they did a year ago.

When: The week of MLK Day (Jan 18)

How: Community group members will pass out paper grocery bags to houses around their neighborhood, specifying needs for their particular community partner.  If that house chooses to participate, they will fill up the bag and leave it outside for pickup on a specified date.

This type of food drive is a wonderful way to serve as small groups/families, meet your neighbors and help the local community!

If your group would like to participate, please follow these steps:

  1. Fill out form (DEADLINE TO FILL OUT FORM IS JANUARY 10)
If you were unable to fill out the form before the deadline, don't worry! You can STILL participate! Contact us directly for ideas, or donate here!

  2. Receive paper bags and scripts
After you have filled out the form above, your HOPEww Chapter Director will deliver a set number of grocery bags to the Community Group Leader's home. Along with the bags, a paper script will be provided to be attached to each bag. This script will provide a description of the food drive, a blank line where you can specify a pick-up date and a list of most needed food items.

  3. Arrange day/time to pass out bags
Sometime around MLK Day, your group will go out, either as a group or individually, and place the paper grocery bags on house doorsteps around their neighborhood. Take advantage of this time to meet a new neighbor...or two!

  4. Collect bags on predetermined date
On the date decided by the community group, they will go back and collect the bags of donations.

  5. Deliver bags to determined location/community partner
Each community group will then take the bags/donations to one of the local food pantries (see form in Step 1 for details about which food pantries we are partnering with). This is a great opportunity to begin a relationship with these community partners!

  6. Take and share photos along the way!
Share your victories with rest of the congregation by texting them to
720-432-6510. It is incredibly encouraging to see how a group of people can help in tremendous ways when they are united in their efforts!
