It can be a little scary going into unfamiliar places and situations. Growing up, my family and I moved quite a bit. My parents were in the ministry, and that required answering the call of the Lord to go anywhere, do anything, and give up everything. But to the average kid, that meant leaving friends, family and everything we knew. At the drop of a hat, your life could be different. The idea of going to new schools, making new friends, living in new homes, and going to new churches was normal, but it never got easier. But there was a comfort that I came to know, and it stemmed from the fact that I didn’t have to make those moves alone. I had my family with me every time. My siblings and my parents were going into those places too. You see, we were in it together. We struggled together, we cried together, we lived together, we experienced the challenges of unfamiliarity together.
I was listening to the song, Psalm 23 (I Am Not Alone) the other day, and it reminded me of those times. But it also brought me so much comfort thinking about the times to come. The first line of the song says,
“The Lord is my Shepherd
He goes before me
Defender behind me
I won’t fear…”
Whenever we go into unfamiliar places or situations, we never go alone. We may not always go with the same traveling buddies, but we have a Good Shepherd that goes and paves the walk way for us. And then He does everything possible to protect us. The year 2021 will be an unfamiliar place. Some of us are going into the year with excitement, while others of us are nervous and afraid. Some of us have lost traveling partners and loved ones along your journey. Some of us are taking the tears and pains of 2020 into this next chapter of life. And that’s ok. But rest assured that you are not alone. God is with us. Hallelujah. God is with us.
“The Lord is my Shepherd
He goes before me
Defender behind me
I won’t fear…”
